When we arrived yesterday I had no idea what was in store. I had watched specials on tv and read articles about the devastation and depravity in lieu of the earthquake in haiti, but nothing could have prepared me for what we were about to see. There are literally thousands of people on the side of the road living in tents, no running water, no plumbing, no electricity. Its so hot, I don't know how they do it. The smell is less than desirable to say the least. Driving from the airport was pretty interesting. They don't really follow any rules of the road, they just beep a lot and it looks like they will just run people right over! We were welcomed by the people at the orphanage, they are taking good care of us, so far the food has been really good. The kids here are so sweet and so cute. They love to get their pic's taken and then look at it right after. They are really affectionate and loving.... and they love to fist pump, I showed them how my son cam makes it rain after!! They loved it!! We were so tired last night we were really anxious to get some sleep.....that didn't really happen! The noises are crazy, it's carnival so there are people up all night having parties, there were dogs barking, and the roosters are the worst! We got up bright and early and leveled gravel and dirt with pick axes and shovels, then the Haitian's mixed cement and bucket by bucket in a assembly line we moved cement to make a floor! Most of it was really hard but it was also really fun too, we had a lot of laughs and it's amazing to see how hard these guys work, they worked all day long...smiling and singing. Yesterday was emotionally draining and overwhelming, but today was really good. We are learning a lot about the culture. There are so many things that I feel right now but mostly I feel grateful. These people are so poor and to us they have nothing, but their faith is amazing, they have everything they need in Christ. They are always smiling and they love God. They are truly an inspiration.
Good night, sooooo tired. Will write again soon.....trying to post pic's too!!
Keep up the good work Karen!!
